Mike Barough (12.29s) and Justin Plank (13.00s) got the team off to a great start by winning the A and B string of the M35 100m respectively.

Reading also dominated the M35 400m as Barough (55.4s) teamed up with Hari Sewell (58.9s), making a welcome return after a 10-year break, won both their races.

The team’s fifth victory came from Nigel Spratley-Kemp in the M35 hammer throw (31.89m). Jan Drzwiecki took third in the M50 hammer (29.59m), before joining Spratley-Kemp in the shot where both took second place in their respective age categories (10.60m and 8.42m).

Men’s team captain Andy McDonald (4.54.7) gained fourth place in the M35 1,500m A string race, with Matthew Harwood (5.23.2) fourth in the B string.

Ray Stevens (M60) battled through an Achilles injury to finish seventh in the 1,500m (7.22.2).

In the jumping events, Ron Davies (M70) added 19cm to his own club record (3.37m) to claim second place.

Plank also came second in M35 long jump (4.85m) and third in high jump (1.40m).

The men’s team of McDonald, Plank, Sewell and Barough rounded things off with second place in the 4x100m relay (51.4s).

The veteran ladies sent a small team of five, but between them they covered multiple events and all put in good performances.

Meryl Austin returned to the team after an injury-enforced two-year break to win the W35 long jump with 4.43m.

The ladies’ other winner was Julie Wilson (W50) who threw 19.43m in the javelin and was also runner-up in the hammer (28.93m).

Daphne Marler (W60) contested four events, finishing fourth in long jump (1.88m), fifth in the 100m (24.26s), fifth in hammer (10.03m) and fifth in javelin (6.75m).

Julie Rayfield (W35) was fifth in the A string 100m in 15.68s, with Sue Francis (16.51s) fourth in the B string.

Francis also clocked 71.0s to claim fourth in the A string 400m, with Rayfield (73.8s) second in the B string.

Francis then came third in the 1,500m in 5.29.1, while Rayfield was third in high jump (1.15m) and sixth in javelin (9.85m).

Both the men’s and ladies teams secured fifth place overall ahead of their next meeting in Abingdon this weekend.
