The result maintained Abbey’s position at the top of the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier table after eight matches.

The visitors also showed they have plenty of depth in their squad after overcoming the absence of a strong of first-choice players to put Abingdon to the sword and run in eight tries.

In fact, the margin of victory would have been much greater had Abbey not missed seven of those eight conversions.

A 35 metre drop goal from fly-half Jim Dye got Abbey up and running, but Abingdon soon levelled through a Mark Roberts penalty - the only time all afternoon that either side opted to kick at goal.

Abbey, though, then found their groove and notched their first try through centre Dylan Baptista, with Dye’s conversion going wide.

Abbey grabbed their second unconverted try straight from the restart without Abingdon touching the ball, winger Steve Warwick dotting down.

Try number three followed when the excellent Chris Shaw caught a line-out before Baptista sent centre Will Handley scampering away.

The bonus-point score wasn’t long in coming either, and against it was Baptista who put Handley away on the left. Full-back Tom Bird took over kicking duties and nailed the conversion for a 23-3 lead at the interval.

The break did little to disrupt Abbey’s flow and they continued where they left off when Sam Hallett touched down following a 30 metre burst early in the second half.

The visitors’ task was made even simpler when Abingdon centre Tom Lewis was sent to the sinbin on 55 minutes.

Abbey’s sixth try soon came after replacement winger Kaspar Struger sliced through the hosts’ defence before setting up Handley’s hat-trick.

Struger proceeded to put in a fine cameo performance, picking up a tricky pass from Dye off his bootlaces and running well at every opportunity.

Abingdon briefly came back into the game, but replacement flanker James Mallon put in a good hit close to his own line and no home try was forthcoming.

But the hosts did not help their cause when scrum-half Ollie Young was also yellow carded just as Lewis returned to the field.

There was still time for Abbey to score two more tries in the final 10 minutes, with scrum-half Will Bevan claiming them both.

He dodged his way over the line from a penalty for his first then charged down a clearance for his second and Abbey’s eighth touchdown.

Dye was recalled to take the final two conversions, both of which he drop kicked, the first being successful.

Reading Abbey have no first team fixture this weekend due to a break in the league and coach Russell Bolton is likely to give his players the weekend off before they return to action on December 6 with a home game against Chipping Norton.
