Single roach is enough to give Hassle top place on the River Kennet RDAA club matches were few and far between last weekend with only two matches on the River Kennet and one on the Thames.

Starting with the Kennet, Sundial travelled down from London to fish the Beat 3B stretch at Fobney Island.

Facing a cold north-easterly wind and with bites at a premium the anglers really struggled.

John Hassle managed to catch one small roach to take the top spot.

John Lea secured second place with some minnows caught early on in the match and the rest never had a bite.

Reading Fishing Club fished the River Kennet on the Calcot B section and the river looked in good condition and hopes were high for a good day but the fish had other ideas and bites were at a premium.

Andy Woolsey managed a couple of roach and gudgeon to weigh in 6ozs and win the club’s W.T Hedges Cup while Pete Budaji netted a few gudgeon to take the runner up spot with 4ozs and Steve Tucker was back in third place with 2ozs.

The Thames at Sonning hosted South Reading A.C. where nearly all of the anglers caught silver fish with none of the larger bream showing. Duncan Bales took the honours catching mainly roach, with a few small small skimmers for 18lbs 11ozs.

In second spot was Ron Cole with 16lbs 1oz of similar species. Completing the trio was George Callaghan with14lbs 12ozs.

Last Saturday the Thames Open, hosted by Reading Fishing Club, was fished at the Child Beale Fishery at Pangbourne and managed to raise some funds for Les Webber’s Angling Projects.

This worthwhile charity has been running for many years and has seen a lot of kids get back on the straight and narrow after a bad start to life. The weights were down on recent weeks but Richard Rosinski led the field from start to finish weighing in 11lbs 15ozs of roach.

Second spot went to Darren Wright with 5lbs 10ozs of “bits” and third place went to Carl Eland with 4lbs 6ozs.

The RDAA Tuesday Club returned to Reading Promenade for their match and found that the resident roach shoal had probably settled down for the winter which meant that the anglers who went for the perch took the honours.

Terry Littlewood fished the worm and the perch obliged to give him top spot with 8lbs 10ozs. The runner up was John Ambrose with 8lbs 8ozs of the same species. completing the trio was Mick Mills with 3lbs 2ozs.
