MAN of the match Samir Kharbouch grabbed a late try to earn Redingensians Rams a try bonus point in a 28-10 victory against Worthing Raiders at the Old Bath Road ground, the shock result of the day in National Two South.

But number eight Kharbouch, superb in attack and defence, was only one of many players who shone in gaining Rams their first points of the season.

He admitted: “I was proud to be part of a squad of 20 which put in so much effort. There wasn’t a player who didn’t contribute.”

Fired-up Rams tore into the fray from the kick-off and put the Sussex men under intense pressure in the opening minutes.

Worthing scrum-half Dan Peach was sin-binned and from a five-metre scrum, Rams were awarded a ninth-minute penalty try converted by Will Hopkins.

The home side continued to dominate, showing far more enterprise in the backs, with the forwards edging the set piece battle.

But Raiders hit back with a penalty from Sean O’Hagan and had their best spell of the game.

However Rams, tigerish in defence, kept a clean sheet with scrum-half Sam Brown yellow carded, before the turning point of the game came either side of half-time.

Just before the break, Reuben Norville intercepted 40 yards out to score for a 14-3 interval lead, then a minute into the second half full-back Olly Foxley collected a loose kick on half way.

He carved his way through the Raiders defence and gave the tireless Aaron Hopkins a simple task of scoring under the posts.

Rams had by far the best of the second half and in the closing stages good work by hooker Ross Crame enabled Kharbouch to put the icing on Rams cake before Dan Sargent collected a consolation touchdown for the visitors.

Redingensians face a tough trip to third-placed Clifton this coming Saturday (3pm).
