For any enterprising student who’s dreamed of being able to seriously expand his or her horizons the new eye-catcher offer agreed between Berlin-based travel experts GoEuro and the University of Reading is surely too good to ignore.

Quite simply it gives students the chance to win a 2,000 Euros Scholarship towards their education, and also a chance to work with the company at its base in the vibrant German capital.

In return GoEuro is looking for truly insightful and crafted 1,500 words essays on the subject “A Closer Europe” - a broad theme which can span everything from improved travel to closer cultural links … or indeed any other valid perspective a student might produce which fits that very wide-ranging brief.

Economics, or politics, education or integrated transport strategy - these are just some of the obvious ways of looking at how Europe can function better as a coherent whole, and of course there are many more.

GoEuro is two years old this year, and is capitalising on its initial success by preparing to secure a still greater reach into a broad target market.

Its website is a “smart” travel search engine designed to allow people to quickly glean details on everything from air fares to trains and buses across continental Europe, and not just in the traditional tourism hot spots but into every minor town and rural area.

Instead of concentrating solely on travel between major hubs its easy-referenced search engine allows users to rapidly connect the interstices of minor routes in order to plan cost-efficient and smooth journeys to all sorts of destinations - literally “bringing Europe closer together”.

This approach makes exploring somewhere like, for example, the Netherlands a lot easier than it might be if trying to identify possible routes and transport times only after arriving at Schiphol, and also permits travellers to strike a balance between rapid transit and travel costs that will suit their particular agenda.

The firm’s scholarship programme is already on offer at, for example, King’s College in London, and Oxford, and now the University of Reading has also recently joined - opening up a tantalising prospect for local students.

For a brief but insightful essay titled “A Closer Europe” the best can hope to win a Scholarship for 2000 euros and a one to three month internship with GoEuro in Berlin - and students can apply for for the programme until December 15.

The winner will be announced on the GoEuro blog and across social media platforms at of the end of January.

Exactly how entrants produce their essay-style presentation is the exciting part of the challenge, because it can be based on a whole array of modern communications aids, from Youtube clips to social media blog posts - or other platforms.

They can build in details of their own personal education and experience too, but the quality of the overall effort will be the determining factor in deciding the winner.

The essential message is to be contained in the equivalent of an essay of 1,500 words, but the sky is the limit when it comes to interpreting the actual theme.

GoEuro’s aim is to understand what a closer Europe really means to young people, and how it might be possible to achieve ambitious goals designed to achieve that great inter-connectivity.

That, clearly, is why it is offering such an attractive and also practical reward for the best ideas and the most compelling presentations - and why for some talented local student “Europe” will soon seem a great deal closer than before
