MYSTERY surrounds why a pedestrian was wandering along the M4 before he was struck by a car and killed last night.

At around 10pm the man was in hit by a car in the inside lane of the eastbound carriageway between junction 10 Winnersh and 8/9 Maidenhead near the ongoing roadworks.

Emergency services were called by a female driver involved in the crash and paramedics declared the man dead at the scene.

Police are in the dark about why the man was walking along the motorway as there was no broken down car nearby and he was not part of the team carrying out the roadworks.

Detective Inspector Andy Shearwood is urging motorists to come forward if they saw a man in carriageway or debris on the road surface.

He said: “It is important that anyone who was driving on that section of the M4 last night – east or west bound – just before 10pm, can recall if they saw anything that may be linked to this incident.

“We are trying to establish the exact circumstances of why the man was in the carriageway."
