FACTORIES in the area may now be redeveloped into over thousands of new homes, under a recently published strategy - including the iconic Horlicks Factory.

In the agenda for an upcoming Planning Committee meeting for Slough Borough Council, a number of 'Preferred Spatial Strategy' suggestions have been tabled - 24 sites that may be considered for the conversion or construction of new homes.

Three core sites listed for new housing include the site of the Horlicks factory, the AzkoNobel Factory site, and Langley Business Centre.

Under the plans, the 110-year-old Horlicks factory site would be converted into 766 residential homes, a number bolstered by a new building would be built on-site to increase space. The AzkoNobel site, off Wexham Road, would see around 1000 -1,400 new homes constructed on the site.

The Langley Business Centre would receive 'comprehensive' redevelopment into residential dwelling and retail outlets. It is not known at this stage how many homes it would contain.

Infrastructure improvements are also proposed for the three core sites – for the proposed Horlicks site, it was written that "retention of the main historic building is wanted, and a link to the town centre."

The Langley Business Centre would potentially see some improvements to the pedestrian and cycle access to Langley Station.

The plans took into account a range of current and future factors that will affect housing in the town, particularly the impact of Heathrow's potential third runway, and the proposed 'Northern Expansion' of Slough.

However, the council concedes in the report that "there is no reasonable option which would allow all of the assessed housing and employment land needs to be met within the Borough boundaries."
