A furious driver has called on Network Rail bosses to take action to ease queues that build up at Datchet level crossing, following the introduction of new longer trains.

Jack Kirk, who lives in Langley and works in industrial marketing at Buckingham Avenue, Slough regularly has to drive through the busy village.

Drivers have always had to accept a bit of a wait at Datchet when a train passes through, causing the level crossing to come down. But the introduction of new longer trains between Windsor and Waterloo has turned a short wait into a long one - twice hourly.

A frustrated Mr Kirk said: "They are too long for the Datchet station platform. For every London bound service the level crossing not only has to close to allow the train to pass but now has to also remain closed for the whole time the train is waiting in the station, as the last carriage now waits across the level crossing.

"How many extra thousands of residents and commuters are held up in the ensuing Datchet gridlock, twice every hour and all because some ignorant unelected official somewhere did not think to check?"

He said queues now regularly built up as far back as Datchet Cricket Club in Riding Court Road, particularly during rush hour as people pile on and off keeping the train in the station.

Train passengers have grown used to warnings that they cannot use the back carriage of the train at Datchet since the longer trains were brought into service.

Mr Kirk has one idea for easing the problem. He would like to see the signal moved 25m down the track, creating room for the whole train on the platform.

He said: "Passengers could then use the back carriage to get out and the train would not overhang the level crossing."

Owen Johns, a spokesperson for Network Rail said, "Network Rail is aware of the ongoing issue at the level crossing in Datchet, and is currently investigating if there are any ways of resolving it."
