THE daughter of a man who died while being treated for pneumonia at Wexham Park Hospital has spoken of how she wants 'the truth' to come out at the inquest into his death.

Rachel Gumbs said when questioned as part of the inquest into the death of Philmore Mills that she hoped to learn the truth and the cause of her father's death so that she can complete his death certificate.

The inquest of Mr Mills, who died aged 57 on the respiratory ward at Wexham Park Hospital on December 27, 2011, opened this morning at Reading Town Hall.

Senior coroner Peter Bedford detailed the circumstances of Mr Mills' death to the jury. He said: "Mr Mills was brought into Wexham Park Hospital at around 7.32pm on December 21, 2011. He had a long standing history of chronic respiratory problems. He was diagnosed with a chest infection and an irregular heartbeat."

Mr Mills was then submitted to intensive care where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and a malignant tumour was found on his right lung.

These problems were further complicated by the presence of blood clots.

Mrs Gumbs visited her father on Boxing Day 2011 and believed he was getting better although he was having difficulty breathing.

She said: "He was so weak, everything was a task.

"He wanted to come home. He felt that he was going to get better and come home."

In the early hours of December 27, 2011 Mr Mills was said to have become physically and verbally aggressive. Nursing staff called security to calm Mr Mills down but they withdrew from the room and asked for the police to be called.

Two officers from Thames Valley Police were already in the hospital and were called over to ward nine where Mr Mills was being treated.

Mr Bedford added: "Mr Mills was wrapped in a blanket and lured to the floor."

He was then handcuffed before becoming unconscious. He was then lifted to the bed and hospital staff and the police officers attempted CPR.

Mr Mill was officially pronounced dead at around 3am on December 27, 2011.

The inquest continues.
