WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook are through to the third round of the Bluefin Sports (UHL) Cup following a 3-0 win at Chinnor on a wet and windy Friday evening, writes Dave Wright.

There were chances at both ends before Sumas took the lead with good work from Connor Holland setting up Jake White, who slotted home from 10 yards to make it 1-0 at half-time.

Chinnor had usual winger Ben Knowler playing in goal and his poor clearance led to Elliott Rushforth making it 2-0 with a tremendous shot from near the halfway line.

The young home side did not give up and forced keeper Sean Woodward into making two fine saves before substitute Chris Hood completed the scoring with a shot from 30 yards which went in off the post.

Sumas were bouncing back from a 2-1 Hellenic League Division One East defeat by Chalvey Sports under the new Lowther Road lights the previous Tuesday.

They had to play with 10 men for more than half the game with teenage right-back George Kontogiannis being shown two yellow cards in the space of four minutes late in the first half.

And from the second incident, in front of the dug-outs, the free-kick led to Lawrie Toombs giving the visitors the lead in the 42nd minute.

Five minutes into the second half there was a flare-up on the touchline which led to Chalvey's Sean Robinson being shown a straight red card.

But Wokingham's joint-manager Matt Eggleston believes they were fortunate not to have another player sent off.

He explained: "When one of my players was on the ground has the ball blatantly kicked straight into his head, how was he not been shown a red card as well?

"He should have walked along with their other lad who got involved.

"Then towards the end, there was a bad tackle on Connor and that could easily have been a red card as well.

"But I am not blaming the referee for our defeat. We weren't as good as we should have been, although a draw would have been a fairer result."

Sumas did deservedly equalise through White after 61 minutes, only for Oscar Betts to win the game on 70 minutes with a tremendous shot from deep on Chalvey's left flank.

Following his side's first defeat of the season, Eggleston added: "I always think in the first five or six weeks of the season you can never judge a team because all players are not available.

"It is a long season and we are in a tough league with everyone capable of beating each other."

Sumas are home to Milton United on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).
