PATRICK Wilmore won the Herbie Sternberg Trophy at West Berks, awarded for the five best scores in the nine-hole Liddiard Cup qualifiers played from April to July.

Wilmore made 11 appearances and achieved the 19 points required for qualification on eight occasions and his best five rounds accumulated a total of 103 points.

Just one point behind were two more highly consistent performers.

Chris Terrett, played 10 rounds, hitting the qualifying target on six occasions, while Jason Kendal went for quality rather than quantity, playing just six rounds and never failing to qualify.

Lloyd Ponsford and Phil Moss won Round One of the Badger Trophy played on Sunday with 66 points beating Martin Rolls and Patrick Wilmore on countback.

There was a three-way tie on 67 for third place with the order of Kendal and Kevin Wilkins, Mark Ramos and Degga Smith and Richard Camden and Mike Denny decided on countback.

With just four shots separating the top dozen places it is a really tight leader board going into next Sunday’s second and final round.

Mary Harwood won the ladies’ monthly stableford with 36 points, heading Jane Wilmore by a single point with Carol Sparvell a further point behind in third place.

Graham Miles won the midweek medal with a gross 101 nett 75.

Ian Saunders was second with nett 79 and Kevin Knape was a further shot behind in third place.

In team events, West Berks entertained Donnington Valley and won 3½-2½, extending their season-long unbeaten record which includes nine wins and a draw.

The seniors made it seven games unbeaten, a run which includes four successive away wins, when they won 4½-3½ at Wrag Barn.

Meanwhile the ladies’ team travelled to Sandford Springs, losing a close contest 2-1.
