SLOUGH Town joint-manager Jon Underwood hopes that summer signings Ryan Bird and Max Worsfold will add more goals to the team this season, writes Rob Stevens.

Centre forward Bird and attacking midfielder Worsfold both joined

The Rebels

from Maidenhead United, who have now gone full-time, this summer.

Bird, 31, began his career with Burnham and in the 2012-13 season scored 45 goals at a goal a game as The Blues won the Southern Division One Central title.

He turned professional with Portsmouth, scoring three times in 20 appearances, before netting for Cambridge United in their FA Trophy final win against Gosport Borough at Wembley in 2015.

The striker featured for several clubs in League Two between 2015 and 2017, but only scored once in 26 games for Maidenhead last season.

Worsfold was the first player to join Slough this summer and scored in the

4-3 defeat to Eastleigh in a friendly match at Arbour Park on Tuesday

.

Underwood

told the Observer: "Ryan is a proper centre forward, a target man. He missed a lot of football last season so is still catching up a little bit, but he showed glimpses in midweek.

"He's a handful, will win a lot in the air and really comes alive in the box. We probably didn't do enough of that in the first-half but played it a little bit in front of him.

"Ryan will bring great experience and a physical edge up top, plus he will complement the other strikers we've got.

"We're really pleased to have him on board and Max as well.

"Max made the mistake for the first goal when he got caught on the ball, but he reacted really well to go up the other end five minutes later and score.

"He's a very tenacious player but with a great left foot. He put good balls in the box.

"He's a natural left-footed attacking player, which we haven't had since James Dobson moved on, so he will give us good balance and more options as well.

"Both of them are good characters and already fitted into the squad really well, so we're pleased they're on board."

Joe Grant from Bracknell Town and Adam Richards of Marlow are currently on trial with The Rebels, who could sign Matt Briggs from Dorking Wanderers this week.

Underwood commented: "Joe and Adam are players that we know and are looking to prove themselves at this level, so we're going to give them some opportunities.

"They both did well in midweek, Joe in particular looked lively down the right.

"Matt came on in the second-half but we struggled to get him on the ball. We tried to play him off the front two but it was quite congested and we didn't really get him on the ball.

"We will have a chat with him and see where he's at. He may be one that we're able to sign as well.

"He's another attacking midfielder who scores goals. We're looking to add goals from last season when we were solid but didn't score enough."

Slough continue their summer preparations with a visit to Arbour Park from National League side Sutton United this Saturday (3pm) and then Bournemouth Under 23 next Tuesday (7.30pm).

Underwood said: "The Sutton game was one we agreed when James Dobson went there as a part of the deal. They've honoured it and it's great.

"They train three mornings a week, not quite full-time, but they will be ahead of us in terms of the number of sessions under their belt.

"These are the tests that we want and we will get the benefit of the games in a few weeks time.

"It will be another tough game and we will shuffle the pack again. Some players got 90 minutes on Tuesday, which was great, and we will give a few others the same on Saturday.

"We want to win games but we're not going to beat ourselves up over the results, that means nothing. It's more what we learnt from the game and there were far more positives than negatives in midweek."
