Woodley Saints FC's veterans team, known as the Deadbeats, reached the semi-finals of the AGE UK Over 60s walking football tournament in Maidenhead.

Playing a round-robin against eight other teams, they secured six wins and two draws without conceding a goal.

In the semi-final against Bracknell Town they lost 1-0, the goal coming with their only attempt on goal late in extra time, but went on to win the decider for the bronze medals.

Saints chairman Cornelius O'Kane said: "It was a marvellous day of football and some great craic, all in the name of a worthy charity.

"The main beneficiary, however, was walking football as we try to restore the game to the oldies by strictly enforcing the 'no running' and minimal contact rules.

"With an age spread in the squad of 61 to 75 and an average age of 67, we were a shining example of what older people can achieve if they only believe.

"The event was a marvellous advertisement for the health, both physical and mental, and social engagement benefits the game brings to the often lonely and infirm older population.

"Our thanks go to the Maidenhead United FC and the Royal Borough for organising and supporting a great event."
