ASCOT United are through to the Hellenic League's Bluefin Sports Cup semi-finals – where they will host Wantage Town – after beating Longlevens 3-2 at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

The Yellamen were made to do it the hard way, as they were twice in arrears.

They fell behind for the first time after just three minutes when Jonty Welch outmuscled two defenders before lobbing keeper Lee Allen.

Ascot responded and George Lock stung the palms of keeper Ash Wintle, while Jonny Denton saw his deflected effort cannon back off a post before they equalised in the 29th minute through Lamin Sankoh's left-footed shot over Wintle.

Welch fired a free-kick through the wall to restore the visitors' lead close to the half-hour mark, but three minutes Dan Price nipped in to rifle a shot past Wintle and make it 2-2.

After man-of-the-match Price and Sankoh had gone close, United snatched the winner in the 56th minute when Geoff Kibaki raced onto the ball, rounded Wintle, and did well to stay on his feet before slotting into the open goal.

To their credit, Longlevens kept battling for an equaliser and Welch was not far away from completing a hat-trick, while at the other end Ascot substitute Luqman Kassim saw his effort blocked after rounding Wintle.

The Yellamen return to action on January 26 when they host Flackwell Heath.

BINFIELD crashed out of the Bluefin Sports Cup after going down 3-0 at Wantage Town on Saturday.

But Moles left Alfredian Park feeling disappointed as they squandered a number of opportunities to have given their hosts a much closer game.

Ian Davies had three good chances before Kaylem Patterson put the hosts ahead in the 40th minute, firing low to keeper Chris Grace’s left.

Grace tipped Callum Wright's 58th-minute effort onto the bar and the ball appeared to bounce down behind the line before spinning out.

But Binfield's luck ran out in the 67th minute.

Firstly, Wantage's Jack Dunmall looked yards offside as he chased a through ball and then an attempted clearance struck a Moles defender and fell nicely to Dunmall who rounded Grace to score.

Wantage, who had knocked Binfield out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup earlier in the season, added a late third goal through Connor Mattimore.

Disappointed manager Roger Herridge admitted: "We made mistakes and got punished by a good side."

One good piece of good news for the Moles was that Josh Howell came off the bench in the closing stages on his return from injury.

The 10th-placed Moles, who were due to visit lowly Abingdon United last night (Tuesday), travel to Bishops Cleeve, who are fifth in the table, this coming Saturday before hosting Virginia Water next Monday (7.45pm).

WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook were involved in a high-scoring Division One East thriller at second-placed Thame Rangers, the game ending 4-4 with the hosts equalising deep into stoppage time.

Sumas enjoyed a good first half, defending well and taking two of their first-half chances through the excellent Josh Harris, who had scored in their 2-1 Subsidiary Cup defeat by Woodley last Tuesday, and Elliott Rushforth.

Thame pulled one back early in the second half, only for the hard-working James Clarke to restore his side's two-goal advantage.

The hosts scored a second, but again Wokingham responded well with George Marsh heading home Ben Broadhurst's free-kick to make it 4-2.

But Dan Bateman's men were unable to hang on to the lead with Rangers pulling one back five minutes from time and then equalising just seconds before the final whistle.

Sumas move up to ninth in the table ahead of their trip to fifth-placed Holyport on Saturday.

Sandhurst Town slumped to a 3-0 defeat away to Combined Counties League Division One leaders Frimley Green after what the club admitted was "a very poor performance".

Sam Hamer, Cameron Miller and Calum Nimmo scored for the hosts, who led 1-0 at the break.

The ninth-placed Fizzers travel to Bedfont this Saturday to face third-from-bottom FC Deportivo Galicia.

Eversley & California suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, going down 3-1 away to Dorking Wanderers Reserves and remain 14th in the table with Ryan Whyte grabbing their consolation goal.

Next up is a home game with Cove this Saturday, followed by a Southern Combination Cup tie at Hanworth Villa next Tuesday (7.30pm).
