WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook defeated Chinnor 1-0 at Larges Lane on Saturday, but the Division One East's bottom side were certainly no pushovers, writes Dave Wright.

The Sumas had to rely on a top quality goal from Elliott Rushforth to secure all three points.

They were the better side throughout, but squandered numerous chances, while the visitors defended doggedly in a performance which belied their dreadful record, which had seen them take only four points all season.

"We certainly made hard work of it," admitted Sumas manager Dan Bateman.

"There was never any doubt that we were the better side and deserved to win, however, we didn't play as well as we could.

"If we had taken our early chances, I think we would have gone on and won more convincingly.

"Sometimes when a game is a bit scrappy it takes a little moment of quality to win and that's what we got from Elliott."

He blasted home the winner after 71 minutes following a free-kick from Chris Robson.

Right-back Robson, however, was not on the pitch for the last five minutes after being red-carded for a foul.

Wokingham remain 10th in the table, but are just six points behind second-placed Thame Rangers, the side they visit this Saturday.

SANDHURST Town produced a superb performance to defeat Hellenic League Division One East leaders Burnham 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy.

"To keep a clean sheet against a side who have scored 100 plus goals this season is to be admired," beamed manager Michael Herbert.

The Fizzers broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when substitute Pat Gardner hit a curling shot with the outside of his boot into the far corner.

And they put the issue beyond doubt five minutes from time with Paul Rake smashing the ball home via the underside of the crossbar.

Midfielder Luke Cox was voted their man-of-the-match.

Sandhurst, ninth in the table, return to Combined Counties League action at Division One leaders Frimley Green this Saturday.

Eversley & California lost 3-0 at home to Tooting Bec, all the goals coming in the second half. They visit Dorking Wanderers Reserves on Saturday.
