ASCOT United's Sam Boultwood has apologised following his controversial sending off in the 2-2 Hellenic League Premier Division draw at second-bottom Shrivenham on Saturday.

He was shown a red card just before the half-hour mark when attempting to leap over a home player, only for the referee to regard it as a stamping offence.

"I'm not that type of player, but will suffer the consequences of a poor decision," he wrote on social media while saying sorry to his teammates and saying he was "speechless at decisions made during the game."

After a rather dull and goalless opening 45 minutes, the second was much more entertaining.

Ascot took the lead in the 56th minute with a Nathan Minhas volley from a chance set up by Luqman Kassim, but Lewis Petrie levelled the scores with a shot on the turn, beating keeper Lee Allen low down to his right.

Harry Laflin struck the Shrivenham bar and there were chances at both ends before Fabien Etienne restored the lead for the Yellamen with 10 minutes remaining.

But they were unable to hang on and substitute Sean McKeown bundled home a disputed late equaliser with Ascot coach Aaron Steadman claiming it was "clearly offside."

Manager Jamie Tompkins added: "Credit to our boys for playing 60 minutes with 10 men. We clearly deserved to win the game. It’s a shame to see the officials on poor form."

His side stay second in the table, four points behind leaders Brackley Town Saints, and the top two clash at the Racecourse Ground this coming Saturday (3pm).

They are also home next Tuesday (7.45pm, taking on Division Two West side Headington Amateurs in the second round of the Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Cup.
