WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook continue to improve after their poor start to the season, drawing 2-2 with Didcot Town Development in their Hellenic Division One East encounter at Larges Lane on Saturday.

But more is needed as they again failed to hang onto the lead. Having squandered a 2-0 advantage when held 3-3 by Chalvey Sports in midweek, they twice led on Saturday.

The first half was goalless with Sam Lawrence going the closest for the Sumas, his goal-bound shot being deflected onto the crossbar.

Connor Holland came off the bench for the second half and made an immediate impact, sending a shot just wide, but there were also a couple of anxious moments for the home defence, with Didcot putting some dangerous crosses into the area.

The deadlock was broken when Sumas were awarded a penalty. Lawrence played a good pass through to Holland, who was brought down as he tried to round keeper Sam Baldock, who was cautioned. Jake White made no mistake from the spot, taking his goal tally to three in two games.

The visitors hit back and twice went close before equalising through Keiran Davies.

Sumas regained the lead when Holland headed over the advancing Baldock, but they held it for only three minutes as Callum Young touched in a free-kick.

Both sides had chances to win the game with Danny Blatchford being denied by the crossbar and Baldock, while home goalie Felix Davies made some fine saves at the other end.

For the second game running, Sumas finished with 10 men with Joe Cummuskey being shown a straight red card for what looked an innocuous foul on Didcot substitute Jake Keeble, who was shown a yellow card for retaliating.

Wokingham host New College Swindon, who are bottom of Division One West, at Larges Lane in the Bluefin Sports Hellenic Cup on Saturday and on Monday evening (7.45pm) meet Woodley United at Rivermoor Stadium in the Hellenic Division One Subsidiary Cup.
