Ascot United remained top of the Hellenic League with a 4-1 win at bottom club Fairford on Saturday.

The Yellamen, following up a 4-2 victory at Abingdon United in midweek, moved four points clear of Wantage, but having played three more games.

Manager Jamie Tompkins was absent due to a family wedding, while some of his players had to change their arrangements with the fixture at Fairford being brought forward at short notice from next March, so their commitment to the club was well rewarded.

They took the lead in the 11th minute when a long throw-in from Jean-Claude Etienne caused chaos in the home defence and Sam Boultwood ghosted in to drive the ball home via a defender.

The Yellamen doubled their advantage on the half-hour. Nathan Minhas was denied by keeper Harrison Ellis, however, the ball looped into the air in the six-yard box, and Harry Laflin headed into the net. Dean Price added a third, but shortly afterwards he fell awkwardly on his arm and broke his wrist.

A foul by Louis Bouwers enabled John Thomas to pull one back from the penalty spot with 90 minutes up, but there was still time for Ascot to net a fourth, Minhas pulling the ball back for substitute Samir Regragui to drill first time into the bottom left corner.

United, who hosted Virginia Water last night (Tuesday), are home again this Saturday when Brimscombe & Thrupp are the visitors and they will be followed to the Racecourse ground next Tuesday (7.45pm ko) by FA Vase finalists Thatcham for a Berks & Bucks Senior Cup tie.
