ASCOT United missed a chance to go top of the Hellenic League on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 at Longlevens, the goal coming five minutes from time, writes Dave Wright.

The Yellamen started well with Nathan Minhas seeing his effort tipped onto the crossbar by keeper Ash Wintle.

Minhas was then inches away from getting on the end of Callum Carlisle’s cross, while Jean-Claude Etienne also caused problems for the home defence.

Both sides exchanged chances in a fairly even second half, although the better opportunities fell the way of the hosts.

Longlevens increased their pressure late in the game and forced four corners in quick succession, the last of which led to substitute James Campbell netting the winner.

Manager Jamie Tompkins said: “We were disappointed not to have come away with a point, but we have still made a solid start to the season and we will continue to improve.”

Tompkins has added former Reading and Portsmouth goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown to his coaching staff. He will assist the first-team and youth section keepers.

The Yellamen are away to Fairford Town this Saturday, the fixture being brought forward from March 16. They also host Virginia Water in the league next Tuesday evening.

Ascot could well be playing 26 league games this side of Christmas, as well as any cup tie, and Tompkins argues that the league are “clearly showing no respect” towards the well-being of players.

  • WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook were hammered 6-1 at Hellenic Division One East pacemakers Abingdon Town on Saturday.

Sam Lawrence failed to beat the keeper from the penalty spot and he had a shot saved before helping to set up a goal for Jake White which made it 2-1, but by half-time they were 4-1 down Anaclet Odhiambo (2), Paul Alder, Ryan Brooks, Conor Harris and Josh Tooke were on target as the hosts made it four wins from five games.

The Sumas are away to Chinnor this Saturday and then take on Chalvey Sports at Larges Lane next Tuesday (7.45pm).

  • IN the Combined Counties League, Sandhurst Town drew 1-1 with both goals coming in the first half, Luke Burrows for the Fizzers and Shane Rideout for the hosts.

They have no fixture yet arranged for this week.

Eversley& California went down 3-1 at home to British Airways. They led through a 21st-minute Cameron Miller goal, but conceded an equaliser in the opening minute of the second half and the visitors added two more in the 55th minute, from the penalty spot, and on 70 minutes.

The Boars are home to Lymington Town in the FA Vase this Saturday and away to Ash United in the league next Tuesday (7.30pm).
