ASCOT United manager Jamie Tompkins claimed his side did not deserve to lose 3-0 to Horndean in their FA Cup tie on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

“It was an undeserved result and scoreline,” he said.

“We had chances to control the game; it was a valuable lesson learnt.”

The Yellamen were on top for much of the first half of this preliminary round tie, but could not find the crucial end product.

The nearest they came was when top scorer Nathan Minhas sent a glancing header against the inside of a post following Jonny Denton’s cross.

Ascot piled on the pressure early in the second half and Minhas saw his effort bobble narrowly wide, while Dan Price shot over the bar.

In the 57th minute Horndean showed them the way to goal when Benny Read slotted home from Connor Duffin’s pass.

Soon afterwards, visiting keeper Josh Whitehead went off with an ankle injury with defender Dan Sackman taking over his jersey.

Ascot continued to press with Minhas again going close and Sam Boultwood heading over, but it was not to be their day.

Horndean broke away to score two late goals through Zach Glasspool and substitute Harry Jackson, the latter coming three minutes into added time as the visitors added a further gloss to the scoreline.

The Yellamen were again unable to find the net on Monday, being held to a goalless draw by Binfield in their Hellenic League Premier Division clash at The Racecourse Ground.

“A draw was a fair result,” admitted Moles manager Roger Herridge, describing it as a “competitive local derby on a testing pitch.”

He added: “I cannot fault the effort of any of my players.

“It was a good point against a side who are difficult to beat.”

Ascot are away to Tadley Calleva in the FA Vase this Saturday (3pm) and then home to Holmer Green in the league on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

Binfield host Frimley Green in the Vase (3pm), followed by a visit from Reading City on Monday evening (7.45pm)
