ETON Excelsior Rowing Club is celebrating a successful start to the summer after taking several titles at Weybridge Ladies' Regatta on Sunday - building on recent wins in Peterborough and Nottingham.

The first win came from club Captain,

Rachel Smillie

, competing in the women's masters A single sculls, where spectators cheered her to a row-over against Walton Rowing Club.

Laura Joel and Charlotte Bish then battled their way past Weybridge in their heats, winning by one quarter boat length. It propelled them into the women's double scull final against Southampton where the team from the south coast pipped them to the post.

Smillie took to the water again later in the day to secure a win against Weybridge by three boat lengths, before missing out on first place against Southampton.

The afternoon saw another amazing win when the women's masters CD coxed four powered across the finish line against Staines Rowing Club with just two feet separating the boats as they completed the race.

The crew included Claire Wincomb in stroke, Barbara Clegg, Karen North, Emma Simpson in bow and cox, Daniella Williams. The crew were racing together for the very first time to make it even more of an achievement.

Smillie said: "We've had a great start to the regatta season. Our squads have trained hard through the winter and spring and the results are showing.

"We're enormously proud of the entire team and look forward to a successful summer."

The club has seen recent wins in Nottingham and Peterborough where the masters women took first place in both locations.

The masters men, single sculler Dave Sutton, and the four (Andrew Williams, Steve Morle, Neil Wincomb and Richard Fulton) also took first place in their races.

With wins for the masters women in both doubles and quads, the club has high hopes for a strong performance at the Masters Championships in Strathclyde next week.
