The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), the largest umbrella organisation for Muslims in Britain, stated this years Ramadan, which is expected to start on Thursday (April 23), “will be a very different experience for Muslims all over the world due to the COVID-19 restrictions”.

With the lockdown extended, congregational acts of worship for Muslims outside of the home in places such as mosques have been suspended to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

MCB has published information and tips ahead of the holy month on how to continue the traditions and community spirit of Ramadan without breaching the government regulations.

Advice for celebrating Ramadan at home includes streaming pre-recorded or live Islamic lectures online, arranging virtual iftars (breaking of the fast after sundown) with loved ones and the community via video chat, and more.

There’s also guidance on how to stay healthy, how to cope with working and studying from home during Ramadan as well as tips on looking after your mental health.

Josie Wragg, chief executive, said: “We know how important Ramadan is to our local communities and Muslims across the world and how different this year is from all others that have come before it.

“We want to encourage our Muslim communities to heed the advice of the Muslim Council of Britain, undertake Ramadan, prayers and iftars in safety, in your own homes with your own households and only meet up virtually online rather than in person.

“We know our communities are sensible and understanding so please encourage each other to adhere to the regulations and keep each other safe and protect key workers.”

She added: “I would like to wish all our Muslim communities Ramadan Mubarak and may this holy time bring you peace and good health.”
