Plans to get residents more active in Slough have been outlined by the council in response to the revelation that Slough is one of the country’s most unfit towns.

More than one in three Slough residents do less than 30 minutes of physical activity a year, figures show. The council estimate that up to £6,900 per person can be saved in healthcare costs by taking part in regular physical activity.

Since 2016, there has been an investment of £62 million in council run indoor and outdoor facilities. In addition to the increased amount of facilities, Slough Borough Council recently unveiled a programme of sport available to residents, with over 100 sessions of sport a week. 25 of these events are free to attend.

Upton Court Park will also host a family 5K fun run in June. The event is aimed at getting families active together with a goal to work and train towards.

A council spokesperson said: “The Council recognises that we have significant challenges in tackling rising inactivity. We want to make being active an attractive, practical and easy choice for our residents, particularly for those who currently do not take part in any form of activity.

“The Council, working with its partners, is determined to turn the tide on this inactivity by promoting the benefits of an active lifestyle and providing opportunities for all to be more active.”

In addition to the events being hosted, Active Slough are also recruiting qualified coaches to help get more people doing regular physical activity. If you are interested in taking part, three events are being hosted to recruit volunteers:

• Saturday 26 January, 11.00 - 15.00 – Cippenham Library

• Saturday 9 February, 11.00 – 15.00 – Langley Library

• Saturday 16 February, 11.00 – 15.00 – The Curve
