Details regarding a former Thames Valley Police officer falsifying statements to gain insurance have emerged.

A public misconduct hearing concluded that PC Nathan Sutherland made several false statements in order to gain insurance between 1 January 2017 and 10 January 2018.

PC Sutherland was stopped after he was caught speeding by a fellow officer on 9 January 2018, resulting to him being convicted of two counts of making a false statement to gain insurance on 29 June 2018. He was subsequently fined £600.

He faced allegations of breaching the Standards of Professional Behaviour in respect to honesty, integrity and discreditable conduct.

A panel at his disciplinary hearing concluded that the gross misconduct was proven. The officer would have been dismissed if he was still working for the force, however he resigned with effect from 20th January 2019, the day before the hearing.

Deputy Chief Constable John Campbell said: “This hearing concluded that his actions were dishonest and former PC Sutherland would have been aware of the harm this would cause to the reputation of the force.

“Had he not resigned, PC Sutherland would have been dismissed from the force with immediate effect.”
