In the biggest government defeat since 1924, Prime Minister and MP for Maidenhead Theresa May’s Brexit deal was defeated by 230 votes.

Theresa May will now face a confidence vote over her leadership following the defeat with Jeremy Corbyn tabling a no confidence vote in a bid to remove the Maidenhead MP from power. MPs are set to debate the motion following Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, with a vote expected at 7pm Wednesday evening.

Mrs May is likely to win the vote, with the DUP and Conservative rebels expected to back the Prime Minister against the motion.

The defeat has eclipsed the previous record for a government defeat – when Labour’s minority government of 1924 was defeated by 166 votes over his decision to drop criminal proceedings against the editor of Workers Weekly, a Communist newspaper.

Locally, both MP’s voted against Theresa May’s deal. Windsor MP Adam Afriyie was one of the 118 Conservative rebels who voted against the bill. He voted for Conservative MP John Baron’s amendment to give the UK the right to terminate the Northern Ireland backstop without the agreement of the EU.

Slough MP Tan Dhesi voted against the deal put forward by Theresa May. In total, only three labour MP’s backed he deal put forward. Tan Dhesi voted against for Conservative MP John Baron’s amendment.

Mr Dhesi said: “Like the vast majority of MPs, I voted against the Prime Minister’s half baked, botched Brexit deal. For more than 2 years of negotiations, Theresa May has ignored opposition parties’ perspectives.

"That is why we as a nation are in a complete mess. We urgently need a Labour Government to solve the crisis facing our country.”
