A PETITION has been launched to save Wokingham Station’s train announcer from his rumoured ban on reading poetry.

Tony Knight is best known at the station for welcoming commuters and trains and reading poetry over the loudspeaker.

James Melville has now created an online petition to “Make Wokingham Train Station a brighter, happier place again” after rumours that Tony had been told to stop.

In the petition’s statement, Mr Melville said: “He has welcomed trains, read poems and told off those naughty trains that are a little late!

“His approach has brought joy and lightened the mood of what can be an otherwise boring commute.

“It has also brought positive press to our town appearing on the BBC as well as local press.

“Unfortunately, he has now been told to stop.

“This petition is to ask that he be allowed to bring joy to our lives again and to be able to give his unique announcement and read his poems.”

At the time of writing, 4,806 people had signed the petition.
