Give Back FC won the second Reading Community Cup.

Hosted by Sanctuary Strikers, Berkshire’s only refugee football club, during Refugee Week; four sides based in the town battled it out at Whiteknights University campus.

Sanctuary Strikers, Giveback FC, Bracknell Panthers, and Wayback Wanderers all competed; with the host side facing Give Back FC in the final.

After a tense penalty shoot-out Give Back FC were crowned the winners of the tournament.

Community Impact award winners at the Reading Football Club gala, Give Back FC was founded during the Covid-19 lockdown and used football as a way to support members in the local community.

Manager and co-founder of Sanctuary Strikers FC, Joel Joseph, said: “We launched The Reading Community Cup last year, with support from the University, and it was a great success. It has been fantastic to hold this tournament for a second year. It is an opportunity to bring local football teams together in the spirit of community and, at the same time, helps raise awareness of Sanctuary Strikers FC and our aims as a club.”

Chairman and co-founder of Sanctuary Strikers FC, Tomson Chauke, said: “Our main mission is not just to play football but to build a bridge for social integration. We aim to create a platform for ethnic minorities, especially refugees, to integrate well within society, learn from each other's cultures and increase their sense of belonging.”
