A series of unique events have been set up across Reading to celebrate 200 years of biscuit heritage in the town.

The famous Huntley and Palmers, creators of popular biscuits such as Nice and Gingernuts, first opened in the town in 1822.

An exhibition called Biscuit Town: 200 years of Huntley and Palmers in Reading at The Museum of English Rural Life (The MERL) will explore Huntley & Palmers’ impact on the growth of Reading, examine the company’s international reach and take a more personal look at some of the people who worked within the King’s Road factory.

The exhibition takes place from 10 May - 25 September 2022, with the museum itself located in what was Alfred Palmer’s family home.

Other events include a gallery at Reading Museum looking at decorative tins, a guided walk through the town looking at the key locations for biscuit production, children’s events at the upcoming Reading Children’s Festival, an audio trail and even afternoon tea at the Roseate Hotel or aboard the Thames River Cruise.

Reading UK’s Alex Brannen commented: “For well over a century Reading was synonymous with biscuits, gaining its nickname as Biscuit Town. The impact of Huntley & Palmers biscuits on Reading has been huge and this summer Reading will be paying tribute to its fascinating biscuit story with a series of special events and activities, starting in May with the new exhibition at The MERL.”
