RESIDENTS have decorated their streets with bunting to celebrate VE day today but one thing in particular has been getting the town excited.

Bracknell has been specially selected for a spitfire flypast to whizz over the town in honour of Squadron Leader Stanley Booker MBE, who was shot down over occupied France on June 3, 1944.

The spitfire will start its route at Wellington Vale Care Home in Waterlooville before making its next flypast over Bracknell for the town's war hero.

There is no specific timing details that have been allowed to be released but it is understood, the spitfire will reportedly fly over its first site around midday.

It is then scheduled to continue to Bracknell soon after this time.

It comes as transport Secretary Grant Shapps has granted the Daily Mail a special exemption for the flypast to the official advice against all general aviation.

The national tabloid newspaper asked its readers to nominate a care home and hospital for the special flypast.

Some residents have even decorated their homes to salute Mr Booker, like Kirstie King.

Bracknell News:

The Daily Mail reports: "Two of the crew were killed but Mr Booker bailed out and was picked up by the French resistance near Dreux.

"He got as far as Paris before being betrayed and handed over to the Gestapo. Five days before the liberation of Paris, he was despatched to Buchenwald concentration camp. Eventually, after a forced march to Germany, he was 'liberated' by the Soviets but had to remain in custody a full three weeks after VE Day before being released."

Booker told the Daily Mail: "'I feel humbled. What's so special about me? There are so many other brave veterans who deserve to be acknowledged."
