FRESH details have emerged about plans for a new “state-of-the-art” gym in Sandhurst.

Last week the News revealed the old Waitrose supermarket on Yorktown Road would be split in two to fit an Aldi food store and a gym.

Designs for Aldi were laid bare but few details were known about the gym, however.

Now new plans have emerged revealing the gym operator applying for planning permission to set up in the building.

Lesuire providers énergie Fitness are behind the move -- a health and activities group described as a “fast-growing, popular new gym operator” which has 100 sites across the UK.

Energie is a “gym with a difference”, according to the operator’s website, and since setting up in 2003 more than 100,000 people have joined as members.

A planning report read: “Founders of National Fitness Day, whether you are a complete beginner, returning to fitness after a break or an experienced exerciser, Energie gyms have facilities and equipment to cater for all.”

The “state-of-the-art” gym would operate 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, and provide members with a “wide range” of machines for a “low monthly membership fee”.

Energie’s planning report indicates new jobs would be created with a need for a full-time manager, a part-time manager, three part-time staff and up to five personal trainers.

Should the project go ahead, Energie would move into the smaller part of the newly-divided building and the gym would be accessible from Yorktown Road.

Bracknell News:

Not everyone is happy with the new leisure space plans, though.

One College Town resident has laid out their opposition to the proposal.

In a letter to Bracknell Forest Council (BFC), they wrote: “The plan envisages people walking to the site via the Yorktown Road — wrong.

“They will cut through Constable/Fielding/ Hogarth Close and we will be back to the anti-social behaviour we experienced years back.

“So residents on that estate will have a lesser quality of security than we currently enjoy.

“Traffic flow will be increased and given the speeds of vehicles along Yorktown Road and the opening hours of the gym it is, in my opinion, going to make the surrounding roads clogged with traffic and could turn the College Road estate into a car park as is the case with M&S and Tesco at Christmas.”

BFC has not made a decision on the plans yet.
