ONE of Reading town centre's main roads is to close this week.

Gun Street is to close from today (Monday, February 17) until Wednesday (February 19) as Thames Water carry out water meter upgrades to protect the street from leaks.

Engineers will be repairing and updating the connection to the meter in the mains pipe.

This will allow accurate data on water flow to be gathered by the company, which in turn can help detect any leaks on the network and help ensure enough water is supplied to customers in the area.

Mark Wheatley, Thames Water’s regional streetworks coordinator, said: “This is an important piece of work to maintain our meters in the Reading area.

“By repairing the connection, we’ll be more likely to find and fix leaks before they can cause major problems and we’re forced to carry out larger and more disruptive repairs.

“We’re sorry for any impact these works may cause for residents and motorists.”

A diversion will be in place on the road, which is a bus route, for the duration of the works.
