DRIVERS were caught up in heavy traffic earlier after a car destroyed a gas main in Woodley.

Police have now reopened The Loddon Bridge Road in Woodley both ways from Coppice Road to the A329 in Wokingham Road. 

The road was closed for safety purposes after a car crashed into a gas main causing a gas leak. 

Emergency service crews arrived from Wokingham fire station and deemed the road safe.

Fire crews are also on the scene. 

Roads policing tweeted earlier to say the road was close to warn drivers to take alternative routes. 

A Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "At 12:55pm on Wednesday, 13 November, we received a call to a report of a car that had collided with a gas main on Loddon Bridge Road in Woodley.

"A crew from Wokingham Road Fire Station was sent to the scene.

"Upon arrival, firefighters found that no one was trapped, so they made the scene safe.

"They were on the scene for around 45 minutes."
