WHEELS are in motion for one of Woodley's biggest events of the calendar year as the town celebrates 60 years of the carnival.

Organisers are already preparing themselves for the event next summer for a special 60th anniversary of Woodley Carnival.

Some £50,000 has been put forward for next year's carnival, as the event organisers begin to book moving floats, charity stalls, bands, dancers, performers, beauty pageants, firework displays, football and netball equipment, a smiley train and more.

As tradition, each Carnival shares a common theme, and the theme next year is "sixty for 60" - organisers want this to be interpreted in any way revellers like.

For anyone struggling for inspiration, organisers recommend thinking of movies or songs from the 1960s or iconic looks from the swinging sixties.

Looking back on previous carnivals, some residents will be able to recall events such as a belly dancing performance, a fly-over with the Red Arrows, Pram Racing (which has been discontinued for some time), a Spitfire aircraft on show and scores of other impressive attractions of recent years.

The procession at the carnival has been a crucial part of the celebrations and is the only feature to star at every single Woodley Carnival celebration since its first incarnation in 1960.

For next year's events, the organisers have the ambitious aim of finding 60 carnival Kings and Queens - a throwback to the event's traditions and to celebrate what was popular during the time of its original creation.

May Davies, committee member and arena events co-ordinator, said: "We are incredibly thankful to everyone who comes to take part and support the carnival, especially at this exiting time.

The carnival will be held on Headley Road Memorial Ground on June 13, 2020. Although certain events are free, day and evening combined entry tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for those aged 16 and under. Children aged five and under go free.

All tickets are to be purchased on the gate.
