MCDONALD’S workers in Berkshire are supporting today’s strike to demand a £15 an hour wage.

While not striking in the county today, industrial action could spread to Berkshire by the middle of next year, a union representative has said.

But organisers are planning to expand it across the UK, after showing it has support in restaurants in London.

Nathan Morrison, union rep for Unison Central and East, said McDonald’s workers in Berkshire could start striking ‘from the middle of next year’.

Staff are demanding £15 an hour, notice of shifts four weeks in advance, and guaranteed hours.

Several union branches in Berkshire are supporting the strike today, according to Mr Morrison, including Unison West Berkshire, GMB Reading and Slough, and Unison Central and East Berkshire.

Mr Morrison said: “£15 an hour is not that much in London. [The company] can afford it.”

He said after speaking to different McDonald’s workers, he heard stories about staff struggling to afford to feed their children and pay rent.

He said with night shifts, drunk customers, and going home at 4am, ‘what they have to put up with is horrendous’.

The organisers are funded by Fight for $15, an American campaign to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
