READING Town Meal is returning to Forbury Gardens next weekend and we've got all the details.

The free annual event is being held on September 28 from 12pm until 4pm with lunch being served from 12.30pm until it runs out.

The community-powered event, similar to a big harvest festival, celebrates the fruit and vegetables grown in Reading and promotes home-grown healthy and sustainable local food.

The centrepiece of the event is the meal made from donations of local growers and allotment holders, cooked by Reading College students, and aims to serve around 1,000 hot meals.

Chair of Reading Town Meal Steering Group, Sharon Fitton, said: "Nothing says community better than sharing a meal together”.

The meal is accompanied by live music all afternoon, family fun activities, a variety of workshops, interactive community and charity stalls, and a host of local producer stalls.

Hosts of performances from upcoming local musicians include, The Newtowners (folk music), Jonny Owens (acoustic Spanish guitar) and Chord Capers and Reading Ukulele Group.

There will also be a variety of workshops centred around sustainability and home growing, such as Tinka Tots DIY Pizza and Game of Food escape game.

The Family Activity Area is also going to full of fun interactive activities including face painting, mini scarecrows, drumming activities, the Great Veg Hunt, and bubble and music pedal generators.

The Reading Town Meal is organised collectively through a steering group, led by Food4Families (at RISC) together with Reading College, Reading Food Growing Network, True Food Coop, RBC Parks and individual volunteers.
