A POLICE officer suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a man brandishing weapons in the town centre on Saturday afternoon.
The officer is believed to have been making an arrest in Queens Gardens at around 3.30pm on August 17 when he was hit with the instrument.
He suffered serious injuries but is believed to be making a good recovery.
A 27-year-old man has since been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place in relation to the incident.

Lloyd Groarke was remanded into custody and is now due to appear at Warrington Magistrates Court today, Monday.
