TO MARK Refugee Week, as well as to celebrate both their 25th Anniversary and being awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services, A Reading charity will proudly present ‘On Her Shoulders’ as part of its very first film festival tonight (June 20).

The Reading refugee charity are screening the award-winning film at the University of Reading's Whiteknights campus, in partnership with Reading Film Theatre.

The powerful film will be accompanied by a special panel of guest speakers, including refugees and local figures, who will discuss the topics raised in the film.

The money raised at the events will go towards supporting the independent charity's continued work supporting refugees, asylum seekers and people with no recourse to public funds.

Free refreshments will be provided at the screening as well, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

'On Her Shoulders' tells the story of Nadia Murad, a young Yazidi woman who escaped slavery by ISIS and found international fame telling the story of her people on the world stage.

Murad's work defending Human Rights has seen her awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize and named Glamour Magazine’s ‘Woman of the Year’.

The inspiring documentary features prominent human rights lawyer and recent Berkshire resident Amal Clooney, who closely supported Murad, and it has received numerous awards, including Best Director at Sundance Film Festival.

On Her Shoulders is also being shown in Wokingham and Newbury as part of the Film Festival.

The Film Festival is part of a year of 25th Anniversary celebration, building up to a celebratory evening on Monday, November 4 at the prestigious Reading Concert Hall.
