EXCITED nursery children took part in dressing up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day.

Staff at Greengables Day Nursery in Owlsmoor encouraged children to love reading by impersonating their favourite book characters.

Jen Ralphs, nursery manager, said: "We have had a wonderful day focusing on beloved books, and I have even had a parent come in to read to all the different age groups.

"Storytelling is essential for developing language and listening skills and is brilliant for capturing the imagination."

The nursery will be celebrating its 22nd World Book Day, an occassion which emphasises the importance of reading.

Children dressed up as animals from the touch and feel book Dear Zoo.

World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own.

It is also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading.

Over 15,000 students across the UK are given book tokens so they can purchase a book for free from a bookshop or get money off books.
