A MEMORIAL day education project took place remembering the child holocaust survivors through lighting candles and prayer.
On Sunday, January 20 the Ascot Holocaust Education Project (AHEP) held a memorial day at Ascot Durning library to promote the understanding of the holocaust through the stories of the 34 child survivors who were cared for in Woodcote House, near Ascot racecourse.
Candles were lit in the names of the relatives of the boys who were cared for in Ascot. The memorial Jewish prayer - Kaddish, was read out and two of the survivors were also present to give a short biography.
The exhibition had stories read from one of the boys in the holocaust and how Ascot played a part in their survival.
The Ascot Holocaust Education Project works with schools and the community by supporting classes through a free teachers handbook on the Ascot Belsen Boys, as part of the Key Stage 3 and GCSE curriculum.
Managed by a community group of trustees and members from the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Sunninghill and Ascot Parish, the project seeks to raise awareness of the holocaust and deliver a education programme in Berkshire.
Students in schools get to learn about the boys cared for in Ascot after the end of the Second World War through the history project.
