Bullbrook Community Centre (BCC) is set to see more than £20,000 of investment come its way.

Funding for the centre would come from contributions from developers in the borough, known as section 106 funds.

And the capacity of the community centre could increase as a result of the improvements.

A report produced for the council highlighted that a new soundproof fire door is set to be installed between two rooms in the centre so that both can be used at the same time.

There are also plans for an air conditioning unit to be placed in the main hall so that the centre does not get too hot in the summer, and new flooring could be laid down in the lobby area so that the centre does not have to close for half a day each month in order to clean the existing carpet.

The report outlined the importance of these improvements, as it read: “To not make improvements to the fire door, main hall or lobby floor will mean that it is not able to accommodate the extra demand created by the housing development in the area.”

The Bullbrook Community Association were consulted on the changes.

The soundproof fire door could be set to help the centre accommodate more residents at any given time, and the centre manager for the BCC told council officers: “The Community Association get many new enquiries for the small hall from groups, however, they cannot accept them because it is too noisy to hire it out when the adjacent room is being used and vice versa.”

The air conditioning unit is set to benefit the BCC as “The main hall gets very hot in the summer months, especially when being used for exercise and dance classes and as the number of people attending these activities grows.

“Some of these groups have to stop using the centre in the summer because it gets too hot and for the same reason, it cannot be hired out to new groups.”

Executive member for Culture, Resources and Public Protection, Councillor Iain McCracken, is set to make a final decision on the allocation of £20,144 by Monday, January 21.
