A MOTORCYCLIST died at the scene after colliding with debris on the motorway.
Emergency services were sent to the M4 near Chieveley shortly before 4.30am on Tuesday.
The eastbound carriageway came to a standstill, following the collision between junctions 13 and 12.
Thames Valley Police launched an appeal for witnesses after a man died of his injuries.
Inspector Scott Long, from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “Thames Valley Police is carrying out an investigation following a collision in which a man sadly died.
"I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dash-cam footage who has not already spoken to police as this could help the investigation team.
“I appreciate many motorists were stopped in the tailbacks however officers are working as sensitively as they can to deal with the situation. We appreciate your patience while this is ongoing.
"Motorists should be aware that there continues to be congestion at Junction 13, the Chieveley interchange, on the A4 and towards Newbury. Please seek alternative routes if you can.”
If you have any information about the collision, contact the 24-hour Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 101, quoting the reference URN 108 18/12.
