Since its first appearance at the Edinburgh Festival in 1977, John Godber’s black comedy has become something of a phenomenon, recalling the heady days of murky discos, loud music, booze and fags, and, of course, the young folk who frequented them hoping to find something (anything) to take them, albeit very temporarily, from their otherwise humdrum lives.

We are reminded of those times through the eyes of the Bouncers outside the Cinders nightclub – a place to be found in most Northern towns and cities of the time.

In addition to their positions outside the nightclub, the cast of four, Lucky Eric (Peter O’Sullivan), Ralph (Pete Ashton), Les (Ashleigh Wells) and Judd (Keith Sullivan) also assume the characters of four beer-swilling lusty lads out on the pull and four willing young lasses who are well up for it, and what convincing characters they created as the show swept us from one hilarious situation to another.

It fell to Lucky Eric to comment on the moral issues that prompted people to behave in the manner they were depicted on stage.

Phillips Duquenoy’s tight direction and the choice of music from those exhilarating days made this excellent production a first class theatrical experience.
