The scrum-half was quick to praise the pack for setting up early penalties and admitted: “I owe it to the forwards. Their hard graft made it possible for me to get into a rhythm early on.”

The University student works hard at his kicking and on Fridays when he has no lectures, he spends at least two hours practising.

He booted Rams into a 9-0 lead after 16 minutes with three penalties after the Bristol side showed frailties in the scrum and under the high ball. In fact Gensians went on to win their own lineout ball and ensure the set piece was the cornerstone of their success.

Redcliffians’ problems increased when No 8 Ethan Doyle was yellow carded and soon after Rams skipper Andy Amor pounced on a loose ball at a short yardage scrum to score.

In a lively first half, Rams full-back Joe Duffelen was sent to the sin-bin and a Henry Bird touchdown and Jack Steer penalty reduced the arrears for the home side.

But between these scores, a slick passing move ended with an audacious dummy by the Rams hooker Ben Henderson who crossed to make it 23-8 at the interval.

Early in the second-half another Reds yellow card led to two quick tries for Rams No 8 Jamie Guttridge from forward pressure.

With the try bonus point in the bag, Gensians relaxed and allowed the opposition to have their best territorial spell.

This produced little and in the closing minutes Rams outscored the opposition two touchdowns to one with a penalty try and a Joe Duffelen effort to which Doyle replied.

Rams coach Mike Tewkesbury felt: “This was the lads’ best performance so far. They had enjoyed a week’s break and were raring to go.”

l ENGLAND RFU President Jonathan Dance will officially open Redingensians Rams’ new £750,000 clubhouse facilities before their National 3 South fixture against Oxford Harlequins this Saturday (2pm ko).

Dance will perform the ribbon cutting ceremony at midday to unveil the clubhouse’s major facelift at the Old Bath Road ground.

On the pitch, ex-Reading Abbey and Bracknell wing, Gavin Dampies, will make his Rams debut after several fine performances for the second string, while lock/back-rower Ian Jeffreys joins the bench with Gus Davies unavailable.

A win is vital this Saturday for Rams particularly as they are at home to promotion-rivals Brixham the following Saturday.

Head coach Mike Tewkesbury said: “We’ll take one game at a time. This league is very competitive and we can’t afford to take anyone lightly.

“Last Saturday our finishing was a lot better and we managed to reduce the error count. It’s a matter of playing our game and being efficient at doing it.”

But Rams will be eager for a repeat performance from when the two clubs last met back in the 2012/13 season with Rams winning 57-12 at home and 44-7 away.
