The 16-year-old was one of the hot favourites to win a gold medal for Team England in the competition.

But the teenager, who went to Claires Court School in Maidenhead, struggled in her heat and could only finish joint sixth.

That sent into a sudden death shoot-out against two other competitors for the last available spot in the final.

Cypriot Panagiota Andreou went out after missing her fifth shot and, when Hill missed with her ninth, Team England’s Sarah Gray took advantage to book her place in the final.

Hill, winner of the 2013 BBC Young Sports Personality Award and also the News-sponsored Pride of Bracknell Young Sporting Champion, tweeted: “Thanks for all the support everyone! Missed out on a place in the final in the shoot off but been a great experience!”

There was better news on the judo front after ex-Pinewood Judo Club fighter Megan Fletcher, 24, won through to the 70kg final earlier today.

The Team England judo player suffered a nasty injury to her nose in her clash with Scotland’s Sally Conway who is ranked sixth in the world.

But former Emmbrook School pupil Fletcher held her nerve to win the fight to add to her victory over Alix Renaud-Roy of Canada in her first contest.

Fletcher, whose brother, Ben, was forced to withdraw from Commonwealth Games through injury, will battle New Zealander Moira de Villers in the final at 6.56pm tonight.
