REDINGENSIANS Rams remain on course for the National Three South West play-offs after four second-half tries saw them past Avonmouth Old Boys on Saturday.

Rams number eight Gus Davies crossed the whitewash twice to score his first tries for the club, while Nigel Gumbleton and Ollie Randall also touched down.

The win means Rams remain in second place, four points ahead of Bracknell with two games left to play.

“I’m so happy” beamed Davies afterwards. “My first tries for the club and that was my first 80 minutes since last April. It was a really hard game up front, especially in the first-half when we were really up against it.

“In the second half, I think the fitness levels showed and we had the belief. Now we need to take that into the next two games and close off the league. Then show that belief, yet again, into the play-off.”

In wet and windy conditions, a James Brooks penalty put Rams ahead early on but it was Old Boys who did most of the running.

AJ Hopkins was yellow carded for Rams for preventing the release of the ball and the home side took advantage when Harry Hone crashed over for an unconverted try.

The visitors were coming under a lot of pressure and only a solid defence throughout the half kept the score at 5-3 come the interval.

But Rams were much improved in the second-half and edged ahead shortly after the break as Gumbleton embarked on a mazy run and jinked past the home defence to touch down for his fifth try of the season, with Brooks adding the extras.

After a five-metre scrum, Davies touched down for the first of his tries but Brooks could not add the conversion.

In the final 15 minutes, with the home side starting to tire, Rams took advantage and added a further two tries through Davies and Randall to secure their 16th bonus point of the season.

Rams could be without two key players for Saturday’s final home match against Barnstaple (3pm ko).

Both full-back Joe Duffelen, troubled by a niggling hamstring problem, and

left-wing George Owen, knee, could be ruled out of the vital penultimate league match.

But, as director of rugby Mike Tewkesbury says, optimistically: “If one or both are ruled out it gives the lads who come in a chance to perform.”

Andy Bryans is certainly likely to return as one replacement while, if both are unfit, a late decision will be made on the second replacement.

Rams face their final league match away to Newton Abbot six days later on Good Friday, April 19 (1pm ko).
