JAAP Stam has played down rumours suggesting Celtic will make a seven-figure January swoop for Reading FC defender Liam Moore.
Scottish media are reporting former Royals boss Brendan Rodgers has put Moore top of his wish-list for when the transfer window re-opens in the new year.
Rodgers has openly admitted that central defence is an area he is eager to strengthen, with some reports suggesting he is willing to pay up to £5 million for Moore services.
Moore, 24, has been an integral part of Stam’s side since joining from Leicester City in summer 2016.
Celtic manager and ex-Reading boss, Brendan Rodgers.
He signed an improved, four-year deal this August and is clearly a big part of Stam’s future plans.
Speaking at today’s press conference at Hogwood Park, Stam said: “If you want to build a club and go somewhere you’re not going to sell your best players.”
And when asked about Moore’s link with Scottish giants Celtic, he added: “If he is mentioned I can understand it because he has the ability to step up.”

Meanwhile, Stam also confirmed Reading may make a second attempt to sign Manchester United striker James Wilson in January.
Royals failed to lure the 21-year-old to the Madejski Stadium in the summer.
But Stam has suggested he could try and resurrect a deal in the transfer window to bolster his team’s firepower.

However, rumours linking Crystal Palace midfielder Jordon Mutch with a return to Madejski Stadium in January appear to be false.

The 25-year-old failed to impress at Reading after joining on loan in January until the end of last season. He made nine appearances, scoring one goal.
Reading return to Championship action this Saturday after a two-week international break when they host leaders Wolves (3pm ko).
