ICE Hockey fans packed out The Hive for a charity match in honour of long-term Bracknell Bees supporter, Jan Kneller.

Friends of Kneller were determined to organise a fixture in her honour after she passed away recently.

So a number of players past and present from the Bees and Bracknell Hornets took to the ice for a one-off fundraising spectacle.

The match was played in a light-hearted spirit, though there was no shortage of skill on display.

Spectators conducted an emotional minute’s applause for Kneller before face-off on Saturday.

Despite problems with the ice, the match itself was a nailbiting affair, with the “black” team eventually winning 9-7 against a “pink” side.

The blacks got off to a storming start and were 5-1 ahead by the end of the first quarter.

Will Stead, Brandon Miles, Brad Watchorn, Peter Jasik and Ryan Handisides all found the net, with Tom Avery replying for the pinks.

Ryan Webb scored for pink to bring it back to 5-2 at the beginning of the second period, only for Watchorn and Andy Munroe to put blacks 7-2 up and back in control.

Pink’s Cam Barker scored to make it 7-3 before the gloves came off as Danny Hughes and Liam Pulson clashed, albeit in comical fashion.

It led to a thrilling finish with Alex Barker and Greg Martyn helping pink haul it back to 8-7, only for Hughes to net again for blacks to win it 9-7.

After the match the Hornets tweeted: “Jan Kneller would have been so proud. We thank you all for a truly amazing, inspirational evening.”

All money raised from the night, which included a raffle and auction, will be split between Thames Hospice and Breast Cancer UK.
