The 22-year-old is currently playing for Porto’s ‘B’ side and Reading scouts were at the Premier League International Cup on Friday to watch him in action against Manchester City.

Reading have watched the right-back on numerous occasions this season and Steve Clarke is keen to bring him in to boost his back-line.

Bruno is primarily a right-back but can operate across the defence if needed.

He has represented Portugal Under 18s and Under 19s at international level.

Elsewhere, David Downs has been honoured for his unstinting loyalty to Reading FC over more than three decades.

But the club’s colourful safeguarding officer and official historian immediately deflected the glory onto his fellow colleagues behind the scenes.

Downs, who lives in Tilehurst, won the Club Hero category at the 10th annual Football League Awards ceremony in London recently.

The award is given to those who work tirelessly in the background without much recognition.

Retired schoolteacher Downs said modestly: “Although the award was presented to me I accepted it on behalf of all the backroom staff who work so hard for the club.

“I’ve been very lucky to have worked with a great bunch of people, both in the Academy and club in general. They are all unsung heroes.” Downs, who gives his age as ‘between 21 years old and death,’ joined Reading FC in 1984 to help former player Stewart Henderson set up a new Centre of Excellence, which later became the Reading FC Academy.

He has performed a variety of roles including club education and welfare officer and is heavily involved in the development of all young players.

All Football League clubs were asked to nominate a member of staff deserving of the Club Hero award, and Downs was the obvious choice.

“I’ve been really lucky because it is a labour of love for me,” added Downs.

“Some of my best memories were Reading winning the Simod Cup in 1988 and the Championship title in 2006 with a record 106 points to seal our first ever promotion to the Premier League.”
