A Callum Wilson header was the catalyst for a Reading downfall as they conceded a further two goals in 14 minutes to suffer another comprehensive defeat.

In truth, it could've been more than three, as Federici stood strong late on to deny Bournemouth extending their lead - with two fantastic saves from Marc Pugh and Brett Pitman preventing certain goals.

The Aussie stopper worked hard to keep Bournemouth at bay until the last minute, and afterwards insisted that his fellow players should follow suit if the Royals are to get out of their winless rut, which now stands at seven games.

“Me personally, I never give up,” he insisted. “In the past we've come back from bigger deficits than that. All we needed was one goal.

“I always feel like we are in a game as you just need one bit of inspiration.

“As I said, I've got a never say die attitude and we all need to adopt that. You want to give them a kick up the backside but you just have to concentrate on your job. I can’t go and defend, and I can’t go and score goals, so I just do my job.

“It would’ve been a lot worse coming in at full-time having lost 8-0, as we saw on Saturday.”

Royals now have the joint-second worst defensive record in the Championship, and the 29-year-old has called on the whole squad to stand up and be counted.

Nigel Adkins’ men face a must-win game at home to bottom side Blackpool in the Championship on Saturday, and Federici said: "It’s a time for strong characters and people need to stand up. We’re on a bad run but people young, old, experienced and inexperienced need to stand up together.

“It seems to be a bit of a theme at the moment. We concede one, then two or three follow. It could've been four, five or six tonight.”
