Pavel Pogrebnyak put Royals ahead in the 42nd minute at Adams Park before Jake Taylor added a second 16 minutes before the end.

The visitors dominated Saturday’s friendly clash against Gareth Ainsworth’s League Two Chairboys, and Adkins was delighted with the performance of his players in the sweltering conditions.

“I thought the workrate of the players was phenomenal, as was their movement in baking hot conditions,” he declared.

“We created numerous opportunities and the players worked extremely hard. I’m very pleased with the players’ fitness and where they are at this moment in time.

“I was pleased Jake Taylor scored as his workrate and enthusiasm was first class, he deserved to score and could have had a double hat-trick.

“Big Pav scored which we are really pleased about and it is something we have looked at. That’s two goals in three games for him now.

“Ryan Edwards linked up the play and was phenomenal with his movement and Nick Blackman came on and rattled the bar.

“There is a lot of great stuff going on at the training ground, we are all going in the same direction.

“The whole team ethos is there along with the workrate and the desire to pass, move and penetrate. We had an array of passing on show on the weekend.

“Then with 15 minutes to go, we made a number of planned changes. They all looked very assured and confident, it’s a young squad but a hungry one.”

A string of Reading first-team players were unavailable on Saturday after Danny Guthrie and Stephen Kelly pulled out through injury.

In addition, Danny Williams and Garath McCleary are recovering from surgery that will keep them both out for several weeks, while Jem Karacan is continuing his rehabilitation from a knee operation last year.

Royals keeper Alex McCarthy was an unused substitute on the day, though the ex-England Under 21 stopper is due to start in the friendly at Stevenage this Tuesday night (7.30pm ko).

Adkins' men then welcome Swansea City to Madejski Stadium for their showpiece clash this Saturday (3pm ko) when ex-Royals favourite Gylfi Sigurdsson is likely to feature for the Swans.

And Adkins hopes supporters turn out in their numbers, after more than 800 Reading fans made the trip to Wycombe.

“It was great,” he added. “We’ve had a couple of games in Devon and appreciated the supporters who came down there, and then even more went on Saturday.

“I value and appreciate their support, it’s been challenging for them but there is a feelgood factor and a togetherness.

“We want to give them a team to be proud of, and something to cheer about. They appreciate we’ve got a young group, they will give them support and give them some slack.

“It’ll be a challenging season, the Championship is a tough ask, young players need support and encouragement and they’ll get that.”

Reading launch their 2014/15 Sky bet Championship season with a trip to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, August 9.

Meanwhile, Reading FC are remaining tight-lipped on the status of Samrit Bunditkitsada's takeover which was expected to have been completed weeks ago.
